Mount Mortar 1F Outside Guide

Mount Mortar is the big cave system off Route 42, built to feel optional at first and much richer once Surf and Waterfall open it properly.

Step inside

Mount Mortar's outside floor sits right inside Route 42, with multiple entrances making the mountain feel bigger before you have seen much of it. The first visit is usually a preview, not a completion run.

What to do inside

Pick up Ether and Guard Spec., search for the hidden Hyper Potion, and watch for Zubat, Machop, Rattata, Geodude, Marill, Goldeen, and Seaking depending on your route through the cave and water. The many exits are the point: Mount Mortar wants you to remember it and come back stronger.

Return with a reason

Return with Surf and later Waterfall when you are ready for deeper rooms, stronger rewards, and the full eastern mountain side of Johto.
