Route 30
14 wild Pokémon across 4 encounter methods. 5 trainer battles.
Route 30 Guide
Route 30 is the first longer Johto climb, carrying you north from Cherrygrove toward Mr. Pokémon and the road to Violet.
Travel the route
Leave Cherrygrove City and Route 30 immediately feels like Johto getting wider: berry trees, side houses, ledges, a pond, and the north path toward Mr. Pokémon's House. Before you have Poké Balls, the battling trainers are tied up with each other, so the first trip still feels like a curious errand rather than a gauntlet.
What to find
Pick the daily Berry and PSNCUREBERRY, search for the hidden Potion, and come back for Youngster Joey, Youngster Mikey, and Bug Catcher Don once the road opens properly. The grass adds Caterpie, Metapod, Pidgey, Spinarak, Rattata, and Hoothoot across the day, while Surf and fishing later put Poliwag and Poliwhirl into the route.
Return with a reason
Return after Elm gives you Poké Balls so the route becomes a catching road instead of only an errand path. It also stays useful for phone rematches, Headbutt trees, fishing, and the clean northbound line into Route 31.

Remember For Later
Before You Try This
Some gifts, paths, and events need the right item, time, badge, or story step first.
A rematch can unlock later
A later version of this battle can open up after more story progress.
Check back later after more story events, and share your number if asked.
Phone number choice matters
Later calls or follow-up events only happen if you shared your number.
Say yes when asked if you want rematches or other follow-ups.
Visit Olivine first
Olivine only becomes a Fly stop after you have been there once.
Reach Olivine first so Fly can treat it as a destination.
Visit Goldenrod first

Ways To Move Around
Some parts of this map need a move, or only work one way.
Cut can open a blocker here
Some small trees or grass blockers can be cleared with Cut.
Bring a Pokémon that knows Cut after earning Hive Badge.
Surf opens water paths here
Water tiles can become paths once you can Surf.
Bring a Surf user after earning Fog Badge if you want every shoreline path.
One-way ledges shape the route
These ledges let you jump down but not climb back up from the same spot.
Look before you hop if you are collecting items or avoiding trainers.
Roaming And Swarm Hunting
Check nearby routes, caller notes, land and water caveats, and what can move before you chase.
Possible roamers
Raikou, Entei, Suicune
Raikou, Entei, Suicune can move through this route once they are released.
Check your Pokégear map, then hunt on land when one is nearby.
Route changes
They move as you travel
A roaming beast can move to a nearby route when you change areas, and it can also jump somewhere else.
If it is not here anymore, step between nearby routes and check again.
Nearby jumps
Route 29, Route 31
From here, a beast usually moves toward Route 29, Route 31.
Use nearby routes to keep chasing without flying away.
Land only
No Surf encounters
The beasts stay out of Surf encounters, so they do not pop up while you are surfing.
Hunt in grass or on land instead of riding across water.
Battle Variants
YOUNGSTER JOEY rematches
