Starter partner from Professor Oak.
Your Starter Pikachu
Yellow's starter Pikachu reacts to what you do, and its hidden happiness changes the special reaction screen.
| What to know | Details |
|---|---|
| Starting point | It begins at 90 happiness when the adventure starts. |
| What helps | Walking, leveling up, healing items, Gym Leader wins, and teaching TM/HM all make it happier. |
| What hurts | Depositing it, fainting, poison fainting, rough losses, and trading it away drag its mood down. |
| Reaction bands | Its special reaction screen changes again at 50, 100, 130, 160, 200, and 250 happiness. |
| Late-game feel | Once Pikachu is already very happy, the positive boosts become smaller. |
Special Reactions
Yellow gives the starter Pikachu a few extra scenes and special reactions around Kanto.
Fishing rod
Using a rod can trigger the special fish-bubble reaction screen.
Pikachu gets its own sleepy wake-up scene here.
Before you help Bill with the separator, Pikachu reacts to the whole transformed-Pokémon mess with its own scene.
When Bill gets ready to use the separator, Pikachu can get a more startled reaction screen of its own.
The Lavender tower floors can force a frightened reaction.
One fan club visit can trigger a soft heart-filled reaction instead of the normal talk screen.
A later fan club visit can swap in a more excited follow-up reaction for your starter Pikachu.
Status condition
If starter Pikachu is poisoned, paralyzed, or otherwise not feeling well, the talk screen changes too.
Surfing Pikachu
A starter Pikachu that knows Surf unlocks the surfing minigame at the Summer Beach House.
| Requirement | Details |
|---|---|
| Summer Beach House | Talk to the Surfin' Dude with your starter Pikachu after it learns Surf. |
| Surf | Pikachu must know this move before the minigame opens. |
| Return visits | Once you qualify, the Surfin' Dude lets you come back and play again. |
| Timer and HP | The beach run tracks time and Pikachu HP, so clean surfing keeps the run alive. |
| Radness score | Big jumps and smooth landings build the radness score. |
| Quit button | Select can quit a run early if you want to restart. |
| Printer bonus | The high-score screen can connect to the Game Boy Printer. |
