Route 22 Guide

Route 22 is Viridian’s western edge, where early rival pressure, Nidoran hunting, and the League gate all wait in the same short stretch.

Travel the road

Route 22 looks optional when you first see it, but it is loaded with meaning. The grass west of Viridian City offers early catches, the League gate waits beyond it, and your rival can meet you here before you have even reached Pewter.

What to find

Use the grass for Spearow and Nidoran-family hunting, then test yourself against the early rival battle if you step far enough west. Much later, the same route holds the final rival check before the badge gates and Route 23.

Return with a reason

Return after badges start piling up. Route 22 is Kanto’s quiet measuring stick: the road that first tells you no, then eventually lets you pass.

Rival Battle Branches

Route 22 first battle

This optional early battle matters if you won in Oak's Lab. Win here to push the rival toward Jolteon later; skip it or lose it and the rival stays on the Flareon path. If you lost in Oak's Lab, the later path is already Vaporeon.
